Located in the heart of quintessiantial Southern Califronia, Caltech’s new 4,600 SF academic building allows students and faculty to feel a sense of connection to its campus. The main structural challenge consisted of compensating for the loss of shear strength along the discontinuous diaphragm, and required special attention in the detailing and coordination. The building consists of robust natural lighting and a garden wall, which adds a compositional element and functionally serves as a built-in bench seating.
